Grief, Bereavement
and Loss
Grief due to tragedy and loss can be extremely painful,
and almost more than one can bear. It is very important
to have support and to not be alone if possible in order
to find comfort in getting through the natural process of
mourning. Grief proceeds in stages: denial, anger, bargaining,
depression, and acceptance. When a loss occurs, the first
reaction is shock and disbelief. Next, when it seems that
the loss is inevitable, anger, as if one is being cornered,
sets in, often followed by a last-ditch effort of desperate
bargaining (as in pleading with God). When the loss begins
to sink in, depression coincides with increased awareness.
Finally, after allowing oneself to fully reconcile with
the sadness and pain of loss, one can reach acceptance.
When loss is accompanied by a trauma, additional difficulties
may be encountered. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (acute
and typical) are syndromes in which people commonly experience
reliving of the event (vivid, intrusive memories), recurrent
nightmares, intense anxiety, social withdrawal, and distrust.
People who have been traumatized can benefit from finding
safety and relief in the support of others who are truly
caring and understanding. Without such assistance, the aftereffects
can prolong suffering and lead to complications, such as
substance abuse and conflictual relationships.
Support of family and friends can comfort in times of need.
Likewise, grief counseling can help by giving you a safe
place and to deal with your feelings over a loss.
