NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) Therapy

Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) deals with the perception, communication skills and actions of individuals and was developed by Richard Bandler and John Grinder in the 1970s. Though scientifically discredited by most, it is still a highly effective mechanism of improving perception, communication and self-management skills of an individual. Tony Robbins a self help and motivational coach (as well as author and businessman) popularized NLP to those who would ordinarily not consider psychological treatment, self help or otherwise.

NLP believes that an individual’s expression of emotion and behavior are results of internal processes which is greatly affected by the individual’s environment. NLP is also considered as the “operating manual” of an individual which aids in identifying the previous steps individuals have taken, actions they have done and experiences they have been through which lead them to where they are today, and whether or not they are good or bad influences to an individual. With this knowledge, one would be able to “reprogram” or “reformat” themselves to their ideal self in order to avoid unwanted expressions.

CTA therapists often use the common elements between NLP and Cognitive Therapy when empowering clients to manage and optimize their lives.
