Executive Coaching

Executive Coaching is geared towards helping executives, business owners and top management to reach their goals of better performance and higher profits by improving strategies and tactics. This type of coaching is usually provided by a mix of licensed professionals, trainers, and entrepreneurs. Business building is a central focus. Development of the CEO on a variety of levels is also involved, to increase leadership, professional effectiveness, and personal as well as career satisfaction.

In many cases the coaching goes beyond improving personal performance to include better management of “difficult” staff or managers, as well as providing the executive with the tools to improve their team’s performance.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy differs from coaching in that the focus is primarily personal rather than corporate, yet is very useful for professionals looking to make positive changes in their work life. Much of what executive coaches do overlaps with CBT, which has been demonstrated by many research studies to be the most effective therapy approach for a variety of psychological problems. The therapy relationship is collaborative and goal-oriented, and the focus on thoughts, beliefs, assumptions and behaviors is key. In CBT, the goal is for a person to develop more realistic and rational perspectives, and make healthier behavioral choices, as well as to feel relief from negative emotional states. Specific techniques, strategies and methods are used to help people to improve their mood, relationships and work performance.

Some Cognitive Therapists will use a combination of CBT and coaching best practices to help clients.

Schema Therapy is similar to cognitive therapy in that the focus is on correcting problems in a person’s habitual patterns of thinking and feeling, and corresponding difficulties in his or her behavioral coping style. The focus is on identifying and understanding, and then challenging and overcoming the long-standing maladaptive patterns in thinking, feeling and behavior that create obstacles for a person in getting needs met and attaining life goals. As with standard CBT, the goal is for the person to feel better and enjoy greater life satisfaction.
